Proverbs 4

Proverbs 4

In this chapter, Solomon continues to challenge us to walk in the "way of wisdom." I notice the similarities about "walking securely" (from 3:23) recited again in this chapter (4:12). When we start down the "way of wisdom" sometimes it is totally a walk of faith, trusting God's word, because the world screams at us that God's ways are foolish and old-fashioned. We can't totally see where God is taking us. Solomon compares the "path of the righteous" to the "light of dawn" (4:18). At dawn there is only a little light; we can't see clearly at a distance, but we can begin to make out the path. Dawn and dusk are dangerous times because it is difficult to distinguish between shadow and reality. Yet, when we walk in wisdom and righteousness, the path becomes clearer, moment by moment. When we choose otherwise, we stumble and fall over little things that catch us by surprise. We put our hope in things that turn out to be shadows, we stumble over small things that shouldn't bother us. If we continue down this path, it leads to darkness and total confusion. Why? Because we allowed a little compromise to lead us out of the way of wisdom.

What wise counsel did the Lord give you today?

Proverb 4:23 "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life."
There are so many things that can attack our hearts. Things we might see or hear. Things we read or watch or listen to. This Proverb goes along with Psalm 101:3 "I will set before my eyes no vile thing." The Lord cares about what I allow into my mind because it will affect my heart and my thoughts and actions. When I was a baby christian God put on my heart never to watch soap operas again. I had watched for years, but when convicted I stopped watching. A few months later on a rainy day as I was flipping through the channels - I stopped on my old soap and watched thinking I could find out what has happened since they move so slow. God has such a great sense of humor... lightening struck my tv and blew it out. I got the message. God wants me to be holy. It is a protection not a punishment or restiction. God is not a "fun-sucker", he is the giver of all good things. Why am I guarding my heart- so it is a place he is comfortable to be, and there are no areas of compromise. I want God's best and he loves me so much that he has told me to protect my most precious part. My heart is free to love him fully. When attacks at my heart come, I remember these 2 verses. I lay those things before the cross and I ask the Lord to keep my heart only for him.

That's also a favorite verse of mine. "Above all else..." - that's a pretty high priority. Other things are important to protect, but if you let your heart go, the rest of you will follow.

WOW! How many times does he tell us how & why we should seek wisdom and understanding from him and only him! When I read Proverbs I feel Gods love not wrath. But then I wonder why I still go astray and do my own thing even when I know I shouldn't. If we walk in his ways and truths we will have LIFE! If we dwell in darkness and wickedness we will have DEATH! Lord I pray that you would keep my paths straight and my eyes focussed on you...Mike
