Proverbs 26

Proverbs 26

Great advice regarding fools. The challenge is to apply to our everyday life. It is easy to discern the foolish things of others but much harder to see it in ourselves.

26:5-6 "Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Or you will also be like him. Answer a fool as his folly deserves, That he not be wise in his own eyes." My natural, carnal wisdom, is to treat a foolish statement with a like response. Yet, I will look just as foolish. Instead I must respond in the Spirit with an appropriate response.

Lord, may I recognize foolish choices for what they are and instead choose your way of wisdom.

v 11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.

I have a dog, and I have seen him eat his own puke. Let me just say that is not a pretty picture; infact, it makes me gag. I think that is exactly why this scripture is worded like that. When we return to the same foolishness or sin over and over, it must upset our Lord's stomach. He knows that those things we are repeating are wretched. (no pun intended) Lord, you know the saying "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" let that not be me. I want to learn from my mistakes, make progress, and be a pleasing aroma to your nostrils, instead of upsetting your heart, never learning, and being a repeat offender. I don't want to be like my dog who has eaten something bad (sin) and when it doesn't sit well - well come back to it later to repeat the whole thing again and see if it is any better the second time around. Remove from me my foolishness so that I can avoid that sin, that is sickening my soul, before I eat of it. And Lord when I do sin, convict my heart and show me the ugliness of it ( the way you see it) so that I may be broken over it, and repent, so that I will turn away from that and never desire to go there again.

Pro 26:12 Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him...
When I read this I ask myself, is this me?
I would have to say yes at times. I relate alot of these verses to family and work situations. I have much confidence in what I do but have learned the hard way that I do not know everything. I also know that I can learn something from a rookie fireman, just as I can from a veteran Chief! This verse opened my eyes when I first read it when I got saved. Putting a fool above a man wise in own eyes hit me like a ton of bricks. It is my prayer that I would be wise in Godly things and gain more knowledge as the Holy Spirit allows...Mike
